5 Common Fastener Mistakes on Construction Sites

Fasteners are small, but the consequences of using them incorrectly are anything but. Here are five mistakes we see most often — and how to avoid them.
1. Over- or under-tightening
Too loose and a joint works itself apart under vibration; too tight and you can stretch or snap the bolt. Where it matters, use a torque wrench and follow the specified torque values rather than relying on feel.
2. Mismatched grades
Pairing a high-grade bolt with a low-grade nut, or substituting a weaker bolt to cut costs, undermines the whole joint. Always match components to the specification.
3. Ignoring corrosion protection
Using untreated fasteners outdoors or in damp environments invites rust, which weakens joints over time. Choose galvanized, zinc-plated or stainless options for exposed applications.
4. Skipping washers
Washers spread load, protect surfaces and help prevent loosening. Leaving them out to save a few cedis often leads to damaged materials and joints that won't stay tight.
5. Guessing the specification
Ordering by rough size instead of full specification leads to threads that don't fit and wasted time. Quote diameter, pitch, length and grade — and if you're unsure, our team can help you confirm the right part.
